Monto can trace its roots back to the 1920s when pioneering families established thriving cattle and timber industries, but more recently it’s the rugged natural surroundings of Cania Dam and Kalpowar State Forest that have well and truly put the region on the map.
And if it’s history you’re after, Aboriginal artwork splashed across the towering sandstone walls of Monto’s Cania Gorge, details a way of life that’s remained unchanged for almost 20,000 years. These days the Sandstone Wilderness is a hugely popular bushwalking destination with a number of picturesque hikes ranging from beginner to experienced.
