This week marks four years since Lady Musgrave Experience's HQ Pontoon was installed, redefining reef tourism with an innovative, eco-engineered pontoon that sets the benchmark for sustainable marine experiences on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
Since opening in 2021, the world-class pontoon has welcomed thousands of visitors, providing unmatched access to Lady Musgrave Island’s pristine lagoon and coral cay as the only pontoon-based experience in this region.
Its design and operation eliminate many of the traditional environmental pressures associated with marine tourism, allowing visitors to connect with the reef while protecting it for future generations.
Lady Musgrave HQ is purpose-built to operate with a net zero footprint:
● Permanent Moorings: Secured by four high-capacity moorings, ensuring no anchors are ever dropped on fragile ecosystems.
● Renewable Energy Systems: A solar and wind hybrid power solution drives pontoon operations, reducing emissions and supporting net zero.
● Closed-Loop Waste Systems: All waste and wastewater is contained, treated, and transferred to the mainland, ensuring zero discharge to the reef.
● No-Impact Design: The structure was engineered in Burnett Heads and installed without damaging the reef, showcasing best-practice marine infrastructure.
● Durable material: Two buoyant pontoons at the base are made from chemical resistant vinylester fibreglass with a life expectancy of approximately 80 years.
Lady Musgrave HQ answers global calls for carbon-conscious travel and continues to demonstrate that advanced engineering and responsible design can preserve the reef while enriching the visitor experience.
The three-level pontoon is designed for both adventure and discovery. A snorkel and dive platform provides effortless access to the lagoon, where visitors explore colourful coral and swim with resident turtles. Dedicated boarding points connect guests to dive vessels and the glass bottom boat, while a 14-metre underwater observatory offers a rare window into the reef’s thriving marine life without the need to get wet.
Overnight guests can sleep under the stars in one of eight luxury queen glamping beds, or stay in the underwater observatory with 20 fold-down bunks surrounded by the reef. Then, join guided snorkelling and diving tours, enjoy unforgettable night-time turtle tours during nesting and hatching season, and create a connection to nature that is both immersive and environmentally responsible.
Lady Musgrave HQ is more than a tourism experience. It is a hub for science, education, and culture. The very first charter welcomed a local school group, highlighting the operator’s commitment to education.
Since then, the pontoon has served as a base for marine research, conservation projects, weddings, proposals, corporate events, and even music festivals, all in harmony with the reef.
The pontoon also drives Lady Musgrave Experience’s sustainability initiatives such as reducing single-use plastics, advocating for reef-safe sunscreen, and supporting reef monitoring through partnerships with scientific organisations.
Lady Musgrave HQ Pontoon is powered by a 52kw battery bank, 40 solar panels generating 9kw, and two 2kw wind generators. A desalinator produces 200 litres of fresh water per hour, while eight air banks, filled by the main vessel’s compressor, can supply around 40 SCUBA dive cylinders.
The entire construction of Lady Musgrave HQ took place locally in Burnett Heads, taking 20 months to complete, including a six-month fit-out at the Port of Bundaberg.
The 36-metre-long, 140-tonne pontoon was towed 15 hours to Lady Musgrave Lagoon, where scuba divers secured it into place with each leg of the structure anchored by two pairs of 2.4-tonne concrete dumper blocks and fastened with 48mm stud link chains.
This anchoring system is engineered to withstand up to a minimum Category 3 cyclone, ensuring both safety and long-term environmental security for the surrounding coral reef.
Lady Musgrave Experience Director, Brett Lakey, says the pontoon proves that tourism, innovation and conservation can work hand-in-hand:
“When we launched Lady Musgrave HQ, we set out to prove that sustainable infrastructure could transform how people experience the Great Barrier Reef. Four years later, we are proud to lead by example, showing the world that advanced design and environmental stewardship can go together.”
Lady Musgrave Experience has been operating since 2015 and holds an Advanced Eco Certification from Ecotourism Australia, recognising a commitment to delivering world-class experiences while protecting the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
