A four hour drive north of Brisbane, Bundaberg is the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Here volcanic action millions of years ago laid down an ideal bed for fringing coral reefs which can be seen on fine calm days by snorkeling only a metre or two from shore.
In the Bundaberg CBD, you can trace the city’s heritage in the museums and gracious colonial buildings. Devour freshly caught seafood for lunch and then spend the afternoon cruising the Burnett River aboard the restored classic river ferry, the Bundy Belle. Ride a historical sugar train through the Botanic Gardens and visit the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, celebrating pioneer solo aviator Bert Hinkler and the wonders of innovation, spirit and adventure. Get to know the iconic Bundaberg Rum, with a Bundaberg Bondstore Distillery experience guided tour and then stop into the nearby Bundaberg Ginger Beer Barrel for a sample of the extensive Brewed Drinks range.
Great drinks are not all Bundaberg produces locally. With its iconic rich red soil, the Bundaberg region is recognised by foodies in the know as one of Australia’s great food bowls and whether at farm gate, a vineyard in Childers or at one of the many restaurants, there’s plenty to sample. Start your culinary journey from farm gate to plate by downloading the Pick of the Crop Food Guide.
